Drying and care

How long does a sofa take to dry after cleaning?

Updated · Reviewed by Equipo SofaSpa

It's the question we're asked most and the one that least allows a number. A polyester sofa cleaned with controlled extraction in a ventilated Málaga flat in June and a thick cotton corner sofa cleaned with too much water in an inward-facing flat in January have nothing in common. This guide explains what determines drying time and how to shorten it without spoiling the item.

The five factors that matter

  1. How much water the fabric received. A well-done extraction leaves the upholstery damp to the touch, not wet. A soaked sofa takes days and may smell musty.
  2. Fabric and padding. Synthetics release water quickly; cotton, linen and fibre fillings hold it longer. Dense foams take longer than hollow fibres.
  3. Ambient humidity. In Málaga, relative humidity by the sea can be high even in summer; a day of terral wind dries far faster than one of levante.
  4. Ventilation. A cross-draught or a fan pointed at the sofa makes the difference. Still air is the worst scenario.
  5. Temperature. Moderate warmth helps; direct heat (hairdryer, heater right next to it, strong sun on coloured fabrics) doesn't: it sets stains, fades and distorts.

How to speed up drying without damaging the item

  • Stand loose cushions upright, not leaning against each other.
  • Open facing windows or use a fan a couple of metres away, not right up against it.
  • In winter, moderate heating of the room (not on the sofa).
  • Don't put throws, covers or scatter cushions back until it's dry to the touch, including seams and the underside.
  • Don't sit on damp areas: it compresses the padding and leaves marks.

How to tell it's dry

Press your palm on the thickest area (centre seat, where it meets the back). If you feel coolness or dampness, it isn't. Seams and the underside are the last to dry.

How often to clean the sofa

It depends on use: a home with children and pets isn't the same as an occasionally used living room. More useful than a fixed interval is vacuuming regularly, dealing with stains straight away and doing a deep clean when the fabric loses its feel or dark patches appear on arms and seats.

How to tell whether a sofa can be cleaned

Look for the label (codes W, S, WS, X), check whether the fabric bleeds on a hidden area and look at the condition: worn or torn fabric doesn't improve with cleaning, and it's worth knowing beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a hairdryer to speed things up?

We don't recommend it: direct heat sets residual stains, can fade colours and distorts fibres like microfibre or velvet. Moving air at room temperature is better.

Why does it smell musty after cleaning?

Usually too much water with little ventilation. Air it with the cushions upright; if the smell lasts more than a few days, ask for an assessment.

Can you sleep on a freshly cleaned sofa bed?

Better to wait until it's dry to the touch, including the inner mattress if it was treated. We tell you when we finish.

  • We don't give times in hours because they depend on factors a guide can't control. After a clean we give guidance for the specific item and room.
